Raleigh-based Fred Smith Co. has won a $9.4 million contract to build a 1.4-mile extension of Timber Drive East in Garner, the North Carolina Department of Transportation said Wednesday.

The Timber Drive project was one of 11 highway and bridge contracts, worth $54.5 million, that NCDOT announced at its monthly meeting Wednesday.

The Timber Drive project calls for the construction of a four-lane divided highway connecting N.C. 50 and White Oak Road, including a bridge over Mahlers Creek. The extension is expected to improve traffic flow into Garner and south Raleigh from Johnston County, NDOT said in a written statement.

Garner will shell out $2.4 million to pay for right of way acquisition for the project, as well as for sidewalks on both sides of the roadway. The project can start as early as June 28, and should be finished by Oct. 1, 2012.

The winning bids received for the 11 projects advertised came in 9 percent, or about $5.4 million, below NCDOT estimates. Aside from Timber Drive, none of the projects are located in the Triangle.

Fred Smith Co. changed its name from C.C. Mangum earlier this year.
